First Campus of Saraswati Vidyalay a Student’s Impression
Early twentieth century was the boom time for textile industry in Ahmadabad, India. Almost all of city’s textile mills were located in the eastern part of the city. It was natural that these parts of the city were populated by poor unskilled and semi-skilled laborers of the textile mills and their families. One of these areas is Saraspur. Here, a student of Ravindra Nath Tagore, the great Indian poet, Raghubhai Nayak and his wife Jashibehn decided to establish a secondary school for imparting quality education to children of underprivileged class of the society. Thus in year 1944, in a warehouse building donated by one of mill-owners, was born Saraswati Vidyalay. Braving all hurdles, the Vidyalay quickly established its reputation as a premier institution. Soon parents from another labor neighborhood, Asarwa requested Raghubhai to have a branch there and so, Asarwa Vidyalay was established in year 1953 Over the years, the textile industry in Ahmedabad has declined. However, the underprivileged nature of demography of both the neighborhoods persists
Activities of the institution expanded over years and Saraswati Vidya Mandal, a public charitable trust was constituted as an umbrella organization .Starting with a strength of 100 students, today the institution is engaged in providing quality education to almost 5,000 students at all stages of K-12 education starting from pre-primary to higher-secondary today. It has established itself as the institution dedicated to quality education, overall development and character-building of its students.
